Shar-Peis are strong dogs of a muscular build, whose loose skin enabled them to be fighting dogs in the past. They are capable of twisting away if grabbed and held tight by a dog in a fight. At the same time, the coat of the Shar-Pei is so prickly and "sand-like," that the Shar-Pei's opponent will dislike the feel of it in its mouth and retreat.
The loose skin comes in folds or "wrinkles." The wrinkled face and body make Shar-Peis unique in the canine world. Also, the Shar-Pei is one of the two dogs having a black tongue, the other being the Chow-chow. The typical coat colors are black, brown, blue, cream, tan and other solid colors.
The Shar-Pei normally lives up to 12 years old, unless the dog has a serious disease that can't be cured. According to the standard, the Shar-Peis weigh about 45-60 pounds. Their height is 18-20 inches.
Chinese Shar Peis - Rescues - What to Expect in These Dogs
Temperamentally, the Shar-Pei is alert and lively, but rather independent and reserved by nature. Most Shar-Peis are said to be unlikely to rush to a stranger, even if he or she offers him treats or cuddles. However, the Shar-Pei's owner can count on him for guarding and protecting the family. The Shar-Pei is faithful to its master and loves playing with children.
Chinese Shar Peis - Rescues - Facts from History
The country of the Shar-Pei's origin was also the country that could have put an end to the breed's existence on the whole. The Chinese Shar-Pei was in danger of extinction in the middle of the 20th century. Pets were proclaimed luxurious items in 1940s. Communist China didn't care for the dogs, let alone for the quality of the breed. Therefore, when scattered Shar-Peis were brought to the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom and then to other countries, they were very far from the present day standard. Their poor health and imperfect exterior gave rise to the common idea that Shar-Peis are fragile and challenging creatures.
